Introduction:
Download Nightmarket 2006 Summery
Nightmarket 2006 is a design
and prototyping workshop for creative designers/artists and skilled scientists/practitioners.
Since the successful workshop event- Asia
Reality 2005 workshop in Taichung, we experienced great creativity and energy
of graduate, undergraduate students, and researchers in Taiwan. It made us to
think about how to extend the passion of creating Taiwanese interactive arts
installations. Why not we do it again? We found that providing a resourceful
environment and gathering interdisciplinary people are the keys for a successful
workshop and great inventions.
By bringing top artists/scientists and their perspectives and technologies,
this workshop provides a resourceful environment and gathering inter-disciplinary
people. Nightmarket 2006 also creates a stage where universities, industrial
companies, and art galleries and museums can talk to each other. Nightmarket
2006 benefits students to have an interdisciplinary perspective and skills from
the three-day lecture and workshop.

Nightmarket experience is easy for Taiwanese people to think with. Because it's so close to Taiwanese people's life, it contains great resources for making interesting arts. Nightmarket experience was a hot topic in Asia Reality 2005 workshop. Several striking prototypes came up related to the Nightmarket theme, i.e. Eat-Eat-Eat, Screaming Market, Taiker KTV, and Shadow Talk. Those four prototypes will also be demonstrated in Nightmarket 2006 by their inventors.
Eat-Eat-Eat, Screaming Market, and Taiker KTV will be presented in SIGGRAPH 2006 in Boston on July 30- Aug. 3, 2006.
In Nightmarket 2006, media artists / scientists and several invited guests will gather together for a three-day marathon workshop. Ideas will be quickly prototyped by utilizing powerful prototyping systems we brought. For examples, Jackie Lee and his Attentive Interaction Design Toolkit will emphasize on interpreting human attentive behavors for interactive space design. Jurgen Scheible and his python-driven Nokia phones will make it easy to let data go through your cellphone or any bluetooth devices. Hyemin Chung and her peer-to-peer sensing/transmitting hardware will enable us to design ways of transmitting our feelings to someone far away. Edward Shen and his commonsense-based natural language processing toolkit will make it easier to browse through and to make use of large media corpus. Francis Lam and his sociable virtual community will make ideas and materials easily accessible online. We expect that great ideas will come out and got implemented by our handy software and hardware resources during the workshop.

Keynote Speaker

Prof. Ted
Selker Ph.D., MIT Media Laboratory
selker@media.mit.edu, http://www.media.mit.edu/~selker
He is an Associate Professor at the MIT Media Laboratory and the Director of
the Context-Aware Computing Group. Context aware computing strives to create
a world in which people's desires and intentions cause computers to help them.
The lab is recognized for its work in creating environments that use sensors
and artificial intelligence to create so-called virtual sensors; adaptive models
of users to create keyboardless computer scenarios. Ted is also Director of
Counter Intelligence, a forum discussing kitchens and domestic technology, lifestyles
and supply changes as a result of technology. Ted is creating the Industrial
Design Intelligence forum to discuss the need to understand cognitive science
and quantitative experiments in doing product design. Additionally, in March
2004, Ted was named co-Director of the MIT/Caltech Voting Project. He was the
inventor of IBM
Trackpoint device. He received Top 50 Scientific American Award in 2005.

Francis is a pixel-art and web artist
interested in the aesthetics and social patterns of online spaces. Prior to
coming to the MIT Media Lab he got a BS in computer science from the Chinese
University of Hong Kong and a BA in design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Alongside of his study, he has developed interests in various art and design
domains. In 2000, he created an online design playground (http://db-db.com)

yihsiang@mit.edu
Daniel is interested in cultural patchworks which can be treated as alternative
strategies to architecture and urban design. To him, architecture includes not
only functional buildings fixed on the ground but also art forms penetrate the
urban spaces. He believes in multidisciplinary practice, operating in the space
between architecture, art, and landscape. Recently, He is doing research on
architectural scale issues.
